چکیده

Experiments are described which demonstrate that asphaltenes precipitated from a refinery tar using an excess of n-heptane spontaneously partition into a contacting water phase in the presence of an ethoxylated nonionic surfactant by effecting a temperature change. The process appears to be related to the temperature-dependent phase behaviour of the particular surfactant. Hot (ca. 80-90°C) aqueous octa(ethyleneoxy) nonylphenylether (NPE8) and the heptane-diluted tar, were thoroughly and vigorously mixed for a short time and then allowed to stand and cool under quiescent conditions. A distinct oil/water interface rapidly appeared after the mixing had stopped and, at a specific temperature, asphaltene particles were observed to begin to “rain” into the lower aqueous phase, producing an

Physico-chemical evaluation of a biocompatible microemulsion system containing IPM/Tween80/Isobutanol

A biocompatible microemulsion system comprising of isopropyl myristate (IPM) as oil, tween 80 as a non-ionic surfactant and isobuthanol as co-surfactant was studied experimentally at 298.15 K. The pseudo-ternary phase diagram for the microemulsion system has been delineated at different surfactant to co-surfactant mass ratio of 1:1, 2.4:1 and 4:1. Some physico-chemical properties such as densit...

Preparation and Evaluation of Aceclofenac Topical Microemulsion

A topical preparation containing aceclofenac was developed using an o/w microemulsion system. Isopropyl myristate was chosen as the oil phase as it showed a good solubilising capacity. Pseudo-ternary phase diagrams were used to obtain the concentration ranges of the oil, surfactant (Labrasol) and co-surfactant (plurol oleique) for microemulsion formation. Five different formulations were formul...

Applying the PR-EOS to Predict the Onset of Asphaltene Precipitation from n-Alkane Diluted Bitumens

Asphaltenes are the n-pentane or n-heptane insoluble fractions of crude oil that remain in solution under reservoir temperature and pressure conditions. They are destabilized and start to precipitate when the pressure, temperature and/or composition changes occur during primary production. The precipitated asphaltene particles will then grow in size and may start to deposit onto the product...
